How to Optimize Your WiFi at Home

October 02, 2017 | 06:19 PM

Location: Your WiFi experience depends largely on how close you are to the router. The farther you are from it, the weaker your connection is. An optimal location to place your router is at an open space or area. It shouldn’t be on the floor or near any body of water, whether an aquarium or water container, and you definitely shouldn’t cover it.

Obstruction: For the same reason you shouldn’t cover your router, you should also be mindful of any obstruction. Concrete walls (especially thicker ones!), mirrors, and doors may weaken your WiFi signal. So don't be surprised if you're having trouble getting WiFi while you're in the bedroom and your router is in the living room.

Interference: Remember that signals coming from different appliances can interfere with each other, which means that things like microwave ovens may cause interference to your WiFi. So make sure to keep your router away from your microwave!

Secure Network: Unauthorized users contribute to a weak WiFi connection. Make sure that only those who are authorized are connected by securing your network with a strong password. Avoid names, birthdays, and phone numbers, and go for a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Also, don’t share your password with anyone.

Number of Users and Connected Devices: Remember that everyone shares a specific amount of bandwidth, which means that WiFi is slower when more people and devices are connected, whether or not the connection is actually being used.

WiFi Extenders: One of the best ways to deal with walls, distance, and other obstructions is a WiFi extender, which can amplify the reach of your WiFi so you can enjoy strong and reliable signal wherever you are.
